September Is National Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Awareness Month

A powerful reminder that mental health is essential to overall well-being—and that every life matters. At SPIN (Suicide Prevention of the Inland Northwest), we believe in the power of connection, education, and community to prevent suicide and promote wellness across our region.

🌱 Where to Start
According to Mental Health America, nearly 50 million adults in the U.S. are experiencing a mental illness, yet over half do not receive treatment. This year’s theme, “Where to Start,” acknowledges how overwhelming it can feel to seek support—and how important it is to take even the smallest step forward.

Whether you’re looking to care for yourself, a loved one, or your community, SPIN is here to help you know where to begin.

Know the Warning Signs
Recognizing the signs of suicide risk can save lives. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, warning signs include:

  • Talking about hopelessness, death, or feeling like a burden
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or favorite activities
  • Changes in mood, sleeping patterns, or increased substance use
  • Aggressive or reckless behavior

If you notice these signs in someone, don’t wait. Start a conversation.
